This month's untutored writing retreat began yesterday as we welcomed the arrival of four new writers working on different forms of writing: two novels, a memoire in novel form, and a new play. It has, as always. been delightful to meet award-winning Geoff, ex-publisher Kate, director Tanyushka and Actor and teacher Sarah. All four have settled in and are enjoying the remarkable views, the fantastic food (prepared by Wendy) and the many different spaces and places to write.
This afternoon, weather permitting, some of us will be taking a hike up Caer Drewyn, across the valley - site of an iron-age fort and a viewpoint from which you can see for miles towards both Snowdonia and the English border. It's Caer Drewyn that dominates the view from our superior room windows and, along with the river and the lush green valley, it's part of what makes our location so special.
On our return later we will have a hot drink waiting - in case Storm Agnes catches us out on the way down - and plenty of time for more writing, with cleared heads, before dinner. This will be followed by our usual Tuesday after-dinner quiz (an unexpected highlight for most of our guests!).
Every new retreat brings new friends, new challenges and new discoveries. We are truly blessed to live in such a beautiful place and be able to welcome so many wonderful writers to our home. We have set our maximum capacity at 6 writers per retreat for the time being - to ensure a personalised and memorable experience for all - and we still have places available on all our upcoming events, including our tutored November retreat and our Christmas Special retreat with full Christmas Dinner as part of the menu! If you would like to join us for any of these, remember you can book directly through the website at www.aplacetowrite.co.uk.
I am now off to write some more of my thesis. I have a supervision on Friday with many, many questions for my supervisor that have arisen out of my latest reading, thinking and writing. Thank goodness I have a few days of peace and quiet in which to write, in order to prepare myself for it!
