At A Place to Write, we pride ourselves on creating personal and supportive retreats that feel like home. We cater for everyone who wants space and a place to write on a residential writing retreat in the UK: from novices just starting out on a writing journey to professional copywriters, published authors, academics, teachers, retirees, singles, couples, writing buddies, friends, PhD students, and more! Our caring and knowledgeable hosts, Nic and Wendy, are dedicated to helping you make the most of your stay in the way that suits YOU, providing the freedom to engage with the scheduled programme as much or as little as you like, with the flexibility to change your mind at any time.
Every retreat - whether running from Monday to Friday or over a weekend - begins with a housekeeping meeting which not only provides key information but, most importantly, also establishes the friendly, supportive and stress-free tone of A Place to Write for all guests. This is, after all, YOUR retreat. Our first night welcome dinner continues this theme with complimentary drinks and a delightful home-cooked meal prepared by Wendy. The accompanying gentle conversation and relaxation lead to an evening spent in the way you choose (no enforced ice-breakers here!).
At any time you can retire to your fully ensuite bedroom which comes complete with a bath and shower, towels, bathrobes, light refreshments, and tea/coffee-making facilities as standard. Throughout each day, across the property, you’ll find similarly peaceful and relaxing places to read, write, study, reflect, create, and find inspiration—both indoors and across our extensive, picturesque grounds. And if you prefer to retreat to write on your own, there's a writing desk in every room.
On an untutored retreat the day is your own to spend as you see fit but if you join a tutored retreat you will not only enjoy an inspiring and instructive writing workshop each morning but you will also have unique access to our uniquely experienced tutors who will be available to read, listen and feedback on your writing throughout your stay. There is no extra charge for this unrivalled level of ongoing feedback personal to YOU.
By the end of a residential writing retreat at A Place to Write you will not only have made significant progress with your book or writing project but you will also have learned new tips and tricks to help you develop, focus on, and ultimately complete the work to the level you desire. On a tutored retreat you will also have gained specific knowledge around the function of characters in narrative development, how to structure a story to ensure reader engagement, and the myriad ways in which details of action and setting foster reader commitment to your characters and plot.
